Blue Crush 2

Blue Crush 2

Blue Crush 2 is another surfing adventure, only this story is set in South Africa instead of Hawaii. Actually, the only things the two films have in common are their titles and the fact that they are about a group of young surfers.

The main character in Blue Crush 2 is a Beverly Hills girl who is at a crossroads in her life. Her mother died when she was small, and now her father wants her to follow in his footsteps and go to an Ivy League college. But Dana (Sasha Jackson) is more like her deceased mother than she is like her father. Her mother was from South Africa and more of a “free spirit” than her father. She was a top notch surfer, as is Dana. So, one day Dana packs a bag and heads to South Africa to search for a connection to her mother and to follow her dreams of surfing.

Dana immediately meets another girl named Pushy (Elizabeth Mathis) who introduces her to a motley group of surfers who have formed a kind of commune on the beach with wooden shacks and a lot of love between them. Dana also meets Tara (Sharni Vinson), the number one surfer on the Roxy team, Tim (Ben Milliken), Grant (Chris Fisher), Cowboy and the rest of the group. Immediately she feels at home, and she begins her Odyssey to retrace the steps her mother made while in South Africa. It is this Odyssey that will help Dana learn more about her mother, but in reality it helps her learn more about herself.

Blue Crush 2 is filled with all kinds of adventure and a whole lot of surfing. It is something that will appeal to teens, especially those who love adventure and surfing, and anyone who has followed his/her heart to find themselves. What Dana discovers is what she is how much she is capable of doing and what she really wants to do with herself. In a few short weeks she becomes a caring, self-assured, confident young woman.

The bonus features in Blue Crush 2 add a lot to the enjoyment of watching the film. Besides an alternate ending which gives viewers more information about Dana’s family and her past, there are deleted scenes. One of these scenes introduces each one of the gang which probably should have been included in the final cut as it does help viewers with their backgrounds.

There is a “making of” bonus which highlights South Africa, a feature about filming in South Africa, and a feature about shooting the various surfing scenes. The cast and crew weigh in about the many aspects of their experiences creating this movie.

Blue Crush 2 is not only about Dana’s search for herself, it is about the surfing culture and the family created by the gang of surfers. As Chris Fisher says about the story, it “highlights the importance of family.”

Blue Crush 2 is rated PG-13 for a fight sequence, brief nudity and a sexual reference. It is a fun film about maturing and about family. Grab your board, and this DVD/Blu-ray, and enjoy the ride.
