"Imagination is more important than knowledge."
-- Albert Einstein
The Lorax is not only a cute and colorful tale, it's also a story that shows how destructive people can be and how it is important to safeguard nature. It's about the circle of life, basically.
When an industrialist chops down a Truffula tree, the Lorax speaks up. He tells him not to do this. The industrialist, known as Once-ler, doesn't heed the warning and discovers he can manufacture a "Thneed" from the soft leaves of the trees. This sets off a chain reaction as he starts clear-cutting the forest, to the objection of the Lorax.
Once the trees are gone, the Bar-ba-Loots, who are creatures residing in the forest, must leave to find another place for food. With his industry booming, the factory puts out smoke and smog, hurting the throats of the Swomee Swans so they leave the area to find a place with clean air. And the pollution that is dumped into the pond makes the Humming Fish leave to find a clean place to live.
Once everyone has left, even the Lorax, the man sees the errors of his ways. Greed can be harmful. He listened but didn't heed the warning of the Lorax. The once beautiful area, with its blue skies, colorful trees, and all the critters that lived there have gone and there is nothing but tree stumps to show for his greed.
Fans of Dr. Seuss will enjoy watching this, but even those who have not heard or read a Dr. Seuss story will see the message imparted here. There's a lesson for all of us in this one little story.
