New Girl Review (S1E19): "Secrets"

New Girl Review (S1E19): "Secrets"

Just like every week, somehow, New Girl seems to just get more likeable. As the characters continue to develop along with their relationships and the plot lines get more original and entertaining, this show continues to be one of my current personal favorites and this episode ("Secrets" S1E19) is no different.

"Secrets" starts off right where last week's two-part, Fancyman storyline left off. To recap, Jess (Zooey Deschanel) went out on a date with the wealthy father of one of her students. Though he did not make a return appearance this week, the rest of the story lines from that two-episode arc continued. Nick (Jake M. Johnson) had a friend in town that helped him realize that college girls still think sleeping with bartenders is cool, while Winston (Lamorne Morris) had just discovered Schmidt (Max Greenfield) and Cece (Hannah Simone) were secretly having sex.

Already by the start of "Secrets," Winston can't handle the weight of the huge secret and tells Nick, much to his protests. Nick, who is horrible at keeping secrets, is then burdened with the pressure of telling Jess. At this point, Jess is already feeling out of the loop because Cece keeps blowing her off, so she forces Nick to tell her after discovering all of his tells.

Having had a difficult time with a steady stream of college girls he's been bringing home recently, in "Secrets," Nick's mind is blown following the Schmidt information -- he soon has a newfound, repulsive respect for Schmidt, and wants to learn how to be a "douchebag," like him to help him manage his sex-life better. While this is going on, Jess avoids Cece, even though they are both preparing to take part in a fast-approaching race.

Secrets S1E19

"Secrets" is very grounded in very realistic conversations, and had feeling behind them, but still sprinkled with enough comedy and witty dialogue to keep them light hearted without taking away from their purpose. Toward the end of "Secrets," a huge fight breaks out and eventually is brought to a close by some insightful words from Winston.

At the end of "Secrets," a revelation is made and everyone gets back together as one big happy family, probably closer now than they ever have been. Even as the relationships in the show evolve, the story lines stay as true and exciting as ever, keeping the audience engaged and entertained throughout each passing episode and looking forward to the next.

I'm excited for what the rest of the season has in store for us, and with only a few episodes left, there are sure to be a couple more surprises in store for us.

I give this week's New Girl a 5 outta 5.

"Oh, I get it. It's actually kind of a fantasy of mine. Could you say the following words out loud? The ice roads are too dangerous. You're going to have to turn back, chief," Nick Miller - "Secrets" S1E19
